The Shar-Pei breed, with more than 2000 years of existence, was in great danger at
the beginning of the sixties Around 1950, the Chinese Communist Republic
government, leaded by Mao Tse-Tung, imposed very high taxes on
dog owners. Only those owners that kept their dogs .as anutritional source
escaped those taxes. Due to the high taxes and Chinese people's poverty,
the dog population in general was tremendously reduced, and especially
the Shar-Pei breed. Only a few Wrinkle dogs remained, bred by peasant
farmers and sold in the street market as rich in protein meat. Some Shar-Pei
could still be found at the period in Hong Kong, Macao and
Taiwan, where they had been smuggled.
My first
Shar-Pei was a beige male whose name was "KUNG-FU'S BAG DAN".
He was born the 18th of June, in 1982.
